As you all may well have heard, a second massive earthquake has rocked the Mentawai Islands in a matter of days and the aftershocks continue. SurfAid International has been sending out an announcement to all of their newsletter recipients keeping us up to date and fully aware of the situation as it develops with eye witness accounts from their teams on the ground. Not only is this devastating to the people of the Mentawais but the threat of a Tsunami is very real and is being monitored carefully. Last night I received a copy of a Press Release entitled “SURFAID INTERNATIONAL AND BILLABONG LAUNCH GLOBAL SCHOOLS PROGRAM TO ALLEVIATE POVERTY”. The Global School Program was created to educate students around the world about the geography, culture, health, economy and living conditions of the people of the Mentawai Island Region. The Mentawai Region is located off the coast of West Sumatra Indonesia and is one of the most prized surfing destinations in the world. This program marks another huge leap forward in SurfAid’s quest to alleviate the adverse conditions affecting the people of the Mentawai Island Region.

Team rider Morgan Hoesterey helps to play an important role in educating the world in the dangers our oceans face in this beautiful but disturbing documentary about the creatures of the Hawaiian Surf and the people dedicated to protecting their future. The playful porpoise and the beauty of the endangered sea turtle are sharply contrasted by the ugliness of the trash littered beaches and the dying reef. If we do not open our eyes and begin taking responsibility for the destruction we cause our natural world we will lose it.
